Engineering thermodynamics : work and heat transfer : SI units
Published in Unknown Binding by Longman ()
Author: Gordon Frederick Crichton Rogers
Average review score:

ideal for interested student of thermodynamics
This book was recommended to me by my Thermodynamics professor when I told him I wish to learn more in the subject. At first the content was hard to grasp but when I kept on reading it all made sense bit by bit. I started understanding all little basics of Thermodynamics that were always hidden in my mind. I first started studying Thermo from a book by Rayner Joel. A good book for beginner but never goes into much details and does not answer those fundamental questions that always seem to keep you away from loving the subject. That sense of the unknown is diminished to a great extent by this book. This book deals more with the physics than mathematics of the thermodynamics. ideal for a graduate or even interested undergraduate student in engineering. It gives more importance to understanding the first principles than overwhelming you with the math and unwanted information like some other books. Go ahead and buy this one if you want to fall in love with Thermodynamics.

The Epistles to the Colossians, to Philemon, and to the Ephesians
Published in Hardcover by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company (October, 1984)
Author: Frederick Fyvie Bruce
Average review score:

Thorough
Since I started seminary, I've enjoyed F.F. Bruce's commentaries. Having started a study of the letter to the Colossians, I've consulted this commentary extensively. His insight and text critical footnotes help the reader to get a better grasp of the content and meaning of this letter. Highly recommended.

Escape from Slavery: The Boyhood of Frederick Douglass in His Own Words
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 2001)
Authors: Frederick Douglass, Michael McCurdy, Coretta Scott King, and Coetta Scott King
Average review score:

A microcosm of the contradictions of slavery
With so much of the sordid history of slavery in the United States behind us, many of the major wounds have been healed. However, that does not mean that we should forget what it did to people. Slavery turned otherwise kindly people into beasts. Eventually, it was the wedge that drove two segments of the U.S. into overt warfare.
Frederick Douglass was one of the most articulate voices opposed to slavery among free blacks. A natural writer, he describes his life in slavery and how dehumanizing it was. The time he spent in slavery was a microcosm of most of the contradictions of slavery. Taken from his mother at a young age, he knew nothing about his white father. A slave was property to their owner, somewhat on a par with a horse or cattle. And yet, many slaveholders fathered children with their female slaves. Many slaves were severely beaten or killed for disobedience. Chivalrous gentleman who would not tolerate a man beating a horse would speak approval of similar actions being performed on a defenseless slave. Douglass was beaten many times, even to the point of possible permanent injury, for actions that were simply human. Finally, there was the bizarre spectacle of slaves and free blacks living in the same areas, sometimes even being relatives by blood or marriage. The woman who eventually became his wife was a free woman while he was a slave, joining him after he escaped to freedom.
It does us all good to be reminded how destructive slavery was to the structure of American society. Douglass lived on both sides of the issue and his story of the slave years are a powerful tale of human destruction. Written for older children, this book should be required reading for graduation from high school.

Escherichia Coli and Salmonella (2 Volume Set: Cellular and Molecular Biology
Published in Hardcover by Amer Society for Microbiology (May, 1996)
Authors: Frederick C. Neidhardt, Roy Curtiss, and Edmund C. Lin
Average review score:

A "Prequel" of Epic Proportions
First there was the engaging saga of "Bacillus Subtilis and Other Gram-Positive Bacteria" that hit the bookshelves and captivated readers worldwide. Now, this TWO VOLUME epic shows us where it all began. It reveals the origins and transformation of an innocent coliform, Ecoli, who just wanted to gain sustenance from its gutter lifestyle and be left alone. I personally found it sorrowful how it became ripped from its sewer home and was probed, analyzed, and mutated into the monster of research literature that it became. It becomes obvious that it was BECAUSE of the dominance of Ecoli, and its more virulent cousin, Styphi, that Bacillus became the rebel hero of bacteria that would wrench the eyes and hearts of scientists away from the Gram-Negative Empire and would bring balance to bacteriology. Particularly intriguing were the chapters related to segregation. While this grand novel is NOT for children, it remains an educational tour-de-force that should be read again - many times over.

Understandable Statistics at Last!
This is the first statistics textbook that I have actually understood and enjoyed, and I have read many of them. The authors take students through the material step by step and do not make assumptions about prior knowledge. The charts and examples are very helpful and clearly presented. As textbooks go, this is the best!

Euripides, 2 : Hippolytus, Suppliant Women, Helen, Electra, Cyclops (Penn Greek Drama Series)
Published in Paperback by University of Pennsylvania Press (December, 1997)
Authors: Euripides, Richard Moore, Euripides, John Frederick Nims, Rachel Hadas, Elizabeth Seydel Morgan, and Palmer Bovie
Average review score:

a return to classics
I went to Columbia, with the most prominent 'great books' curriculum still in existence. 25 years later, I'm finding myself re-reading and discussing many of the titles. The Penn Greek Drama series is a handsome library of new translations that give fresh takes on the classics. It's useful to have Euripides on the shelf when you return home from the recent bravura performance by Fiona Shaw as Medea--it settled an argument too on how it 'originally' ended.

The Best Piece of Science Curriculm For Kids I've Ever Found
Thank goodness I found this book before I started teaching a class on Oceanography! "Exploring the Oceans" was not only a clear and well thought out book but it was clearly written by someone who understands children. The book is riddled with fun and educational activities that work exptremely well for kinistetic learners. it was organized into managable chapters that allowed the students to focus on a cohesive set of ideas while previewing the concepts to come. A wonderful tool for getting kids excited about science and the ocean.

Faith Foolishness or Presumption
Published in Paperback by Harrison House, Incorporated (January, 1981)
Authors: Frederick T. Price and Frederick K. C. Price
Average review score:

Shows The Difference Between Faith and other Stuff
Dr. Price Has done an excellent job in showing God's people the difference between FAITH and the foolishness or presumptions that diguise themselves as faith. He addresses such practical topics as Life insurance, Doctors and medicine, Family decisions about tithing, etc.

Dr. Price, being a Word of Faith teacher himself, helps us to overcome the extremities and bondages that can come as a result of misunderstanding the message of faith. Many have made false accusations concerning Dr. Price and other faith teachers. Obviously, his accusers have overlooked this treasure that many years ago attempted to bring balance and freedom. Best of all, it is a simple book that is very easy to read.

This book will certainly dispel the lies that have spoken against the faith message but most importantly, will help those who have questions concerning practical everyday issues and the use of their faith in God.
